The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped gland in the neck, just in front of the windpipe (trachea). Thyroid ultrasound is performed for various indications like fullness in the neck, goitre, lump, thyrotoxicosis (increased activity) or hypothyroidism (decreased activity).
